Volunteers sought to fill openings on City boards

Are you interested in serving on one of the City's boards or commissions? The City's Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee, Building Board of Adjustments and Appeals, Planning Commission, Cultural Arts Commission, and Board of Zoning Appeals have current openings.

Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee (ATAC)
There is currently one opening on the ATAC, which is comprised of seven members. The opening is for a community member from a "Cultural Organization." The Committee's other members include two from the Hospitality Industry, two from the Lodging Industry, and there are two at-large members. The ATAC meets once a year at City Hall.
Building Board of Adjustments and Appeals (BBAA)
There are currently two openings on the Building Board of Adjustments and Appeals (BBAA), for two at-large volunteers. The BBAA hears and decides appeals when it is alleged there is an error in any order or in a requirement, decision or determination made by the Building Official. The BBAA may authorize a variance from the terms of City Code. The BBAA meets on an as-needed basis. For more information, call Thurman Pellum at (843) 797-6220 ext. 3247.
The City is seeking three volunteer members (at-large) to serve on the Planning Commission. The Commission is, by state statute, responsible for determining many of the land use processes.It Identifies the needs of the city, establishing both short and long-term goals for the development of the city, and then writing and updating the city's Comprehensive Plan and recommending zoning ordinances that support those plans. The Commission is comprised of seven members, and meets on the first Tuesday of the month at City Hall.
There is currently two opening (at large) on the City's Board of Zoning Appeals.
The BZA is composed of five members at-large. The BZA determines conditional use permits, zoning ordinance variance requests, and appeals of decisions made by the zoning administrator. A conditional use permit is typically applicable when a property owner wishes to have a specific type of development approved for a specific location. Zoning variances can be requested when a property owner feels that, due to unusual circumstances, a zoning restriction causes what is referred to as an "unnecessary hardship," and the situation meets the specific criteria set for such. An appeal may be made when a property owner feels the zoning administrator has incorrectly interpreted the zoning ordinance.
The Cultural Arts Commission is comprised of seven members. The CAC meets from 6 to 7 p.m. on the second Monday of every month at The Creek Collective (222 St James Ave).
